For days my bible and notebook, work calendar, articles for a grad school assignment and my computer have all been laid out on the kitchen table waiting for the attention they will hopefully get during one of the free moments that appear during the day. Summer has just begun and as much as I love the carefree, unscheduledness, it really cuts in to my structured, scheduled time. Irony at its finest. But then, God, in His loving-kindness grants you a morning with boys sleeping in and in a 13 word sentence gives you peace and more than a bit of inspiration.

Game shows to kids in the 90's are what reality shows are to kids today. I have many a fond memory of watching Wheel of Fortune, Press your Luck, $100,000 Pyramid, Price is Right and a host of others with my family as well as more kid centered ones like Double Dare, Guts!, and Legends of the Hidden Temple. Words cannot explain how much my neat freak, OCD self wanted to run through the house in Finders Keepers and just trash everything while I looked for the hidden item or how insanely fun it would be to run through a store throwing hams in a cart and zooming around the corner just before the buzzer went off in Supermarket Sweep.

We are not Scouts. My husband's was not a Scout, my boys are not Scouts. They each have many friends who are and there is a brother in law in the family who is, but he's not blood related, so we can't even claim some of the Scout DNA. The only reason I say this is to make sure it is known that I don't know the rules and regulations, I have no idea of the requirements that have to be met to move up the ladder, and I am sure I only understand just a smidge of the hard work it all entails. However, as lovers of the outdoors and all the beauty it can hold, there are two sayings the Scouts are known for that I, that we, can relate to and apply to much more of life than the act of communing with nature.

The Christian walk is a various path of loops, dead ends, walls to climb over, pits to fall in, huge hills to traverse, and yes the occasional straightaway where things seem to be going ok. Once a lesson is learned, it's not always learned for good. It might seem familiar the next time it comes around, but we are hard-headed at times and forgetful at others which means inevitably we must learn things a thousand times over.
